Monitoring Street Infrastructures with Artificial Intelligence
Sensor-based IoT data is enhancing information gathering methods for urban planning in many ways and, due to the growing data pool provided by these sensors, more and more cities and municipalities are consequently putting the use of artificial intelligence-based (AI) methods on their agenda. One area of urban planning that will benefit significantly from the new possibilities enabled by AI is that of infrastructure monitoring. As the topic of the investment backlog of German road infrastructures increasingly pushes into public discourse, many potential areas for application of such a system are opening up. Given the fact that a large part of the German road infrastructure was planned and built several decades ago, and considering that the traffic volume has increased tremendously since then, the urgency in the development of improved maintenance methods is evident: Today's solutions for infrastructure monitoring are either too labor-intensive, too resource-intensive or too inflexible for the scenario at hand. However, a promising avenue for further research opened up through the advent of mobile communication devices, such as smartphones, incombination with artificial intelligence approaches. This paper describes the methodology applied in the ongoing research project DatEnKoSt, in which these comparatively cheap and sensor-laden devices are used to realize low-cost acquisition methods: Mounting the smartphone in a vehicle, a multi-sensor datastream can be recorded, including, for instance, accelerometer data, GPS coordinates, image or even audio data. From the datastream, features correlated with the road condition can then be extracted, e.g., image processing methods may extract individual cracks from the image data, signal processing can aid analysis of the accelerometer data to determine strength of vibrations, etc.. Using supervised learning methods, thesefeatures may be mapped to standardized profiles of the current state of the infrastructure. Even more,predictive methods can, in addition to a mere monitoring of the current state of the infrastructure, enable new ways to provide more precise forecasts and eventually, leveraging optimization algorithms, automatically derive the right maintenance measures for each given situation. The municipal preservation of traffic routes becomes more efficient and sustainable. The methodology enables the potential for further use in the light of real-time as well as predictive road infrastructure monitoring such as winter road services
Laser Control of Dissipative Two-Exciton Dynamics in Molecular Aggregates
There are two types of two-photon transitions in molecular aggregates, that
is, non-local excitations of two monomers and local double excitations to some
higher excited intra-monomer electronic state. As a consequence of the
inter-monomer Coulomb interaction these different excitation states are coupled
to each other. Higher excited intra-monomer states are rather short-lived due
to efficient internal conversion of electronic into vibrational energy.
Combining both processes leads to the annihilation of an electronic excitation
state, which is a major loss channel for establishing high excitation densities
in molecular aggregates. Applying theoretical pulse optimization techniques to
a Frenkel exciton model it is shown that the dynamics of two-exciton states in
linear aggregates (dimer to tetramer) can be influenced by ultrafast shaped
laser pulses. In particular, it is studied to what extent the decay of the
two-exciton population by inter-band transitions can be transiently suppressed.
Intra-band dynamics is described by a dissipative hierarchy equation approach,
which takes into account strong exciton-vibrational coupling in the

Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interferometry
A transition between energy levels at an avoided crossing is known as a
Landau-Zener transition. When a two-level system (TLS) is subject to periodic
driving with sufficiently large amplitude, a sequence of transitions occurs.
The phase accumulated between transitions (commonly known as the Stuckelberg
phase) may result in constructive or destructive interference. Accordingly, the
physical observables of the system exhibit periodic dependence on the various
system parameters. This phenomenon is often referred to as
Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg (LZS) interferometry. Phenomena related to LZS
interferometry occur in a variety of physical systems. In particular, recent
experiments on LZS interferometry in superconducting TLSs (qubits) have
demonstrated the potential for using this kind of interferometry as an
effective tool for obtaining the parameters characterizing the TLS as well as
its interaction with the control fields and with the environment. Furthermore,
strong driving could allow for fast and reliable control of the quantum system.
Here we review recent experimental results on LZS interferometry, and we

Smarter screen space shading
This dissertation introduces a range of new methods to produce images of virtual scenes in a matter of milliseconds. Imposing as few constraints as possible on the set of scenes that can be handled, e.g., regarding geometric changes over time or lighting conditions, precludes pre-computations and makes this a particularly difficult problem. We first present a general approach, called deep screen space, using which a variety of light transport aspects can be simulated within the aforementioned setting. This approach is then further extended to additionally handle scenes containing participating media like clouds. We also show how to improve the correctness of deep screen space and related algorithms by accounting for mutual visibility of points in a scene. After that, we take a completely different point of view on image generation using a learning-based approach to approximate a rendering function. We show that neural networks can hallucinate shading effects which otherwise have to be computed using costly analytic computations. Finally, we contribute a holistic framework to deal with phosphorescent materials in computer graphics, covering all aspects from acquisition of real materials, to easy editing, to image synthesis.Diese Dissertation stellt eine Reihe neuer Methoden vor, um Bilder virtueller Szenen innerhalb von Millisekunden zu erzeugen. Die BeschrĂ€nkung auf so wenige Annahmen wie möglich hinsichtlich der zu verarbeitenden Szenen, z.B. was Ănderungen der Geometrie oder der Beleuchtung angeht, macht Vorberechnungen unmöglich und erschwert das Gesamtproblem. Wir beschreiben zunĂ€chst einen allgemeinen Ansatz, von uns Deep-Screen-Space genannt, mit dem viele Lichttransportaspekte innerhalb des oben genannten Rahmens simuliert werden können. Dieser Ansatz wird dann auf Szenen, die trĂŒbe Medien enthalten, erweitert. Wir zeigen auĂerdem, wie die Genaugikeit der Deep-Screen-Space-Methode und verwandter Algorithmen durch BerĂŒcksichtigung der gegenseitigen Sichtbarkeit von Punkten in einer Szene verbessert werden kann. Danach betrachten wir das Problem der Bildsynthese von einem komplett anderen Blickwinkel und nĂ€hern eine Renderingfunktion mithilfe von Maschinenlernen an. Wir zeigen, dass neuronale Netzwerke Beleuchtungseffekte, die sonst auf kostspielige Weise analytisch berechnet werden mĂŒssen, unmittelbar halluzinieren können. Zuletzt stellen wir eine ganzheitliche Methodik zum Umgang mit phosphoreszenten Materialien in der Computergrafik vor, die alle Aspekte, von der Ausmessung echter Materialien, ĂŒber eine einfache Bearbeitung dieser, bis hin zur Bildsynthese, abdeckt
Holographic Recommendations in Brick-and-Mortar Stores
To keep up with their competition from e-commerce, traditional retailers are transitioning into an omnichannel retail that places the customerâs shopping journey at the center of the business model by creating digital services that enhance the customer experience. A key service is in-store digital assistance. However, due to the scarcity of the required input data and the lack of a system design that would mitigate this problem; another remaining problem is the need for an output channel to present the personalized content that a customer would be willing to use. Following a design science approach, we identified requirements to reach the desire-end artifact and bridge them. Therefore, we propose an in-store recommender system that leverages mixed-reality technology to both gather necessary data and present relevant content in an immersive way, boosting the customer experience in brick-and-mortar stores
